Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly

Charles Buchan

Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly is widely acknowledged as the world’s first magazine truly dedicated to the sport of football.

It was first published in September 1951. Founded by Charles Buchan, a distinguished player with Sunderland, Arsenal and England, who became a well-respected journalist, and with articles written by players and football writers of the era, it reports on the issues in a straightforward manner reflecting far simpler and less media savvy times.

What is perhaps often neglected in today’s world of 24-hour rolling media coverage is that the magazine was the main vehicle through which supporters got their fix of football news. This was the only dedicated soccer publication that provided in-depth comment and analysis on key events such as the Munich air disaster, the banning of the minimum wage, Celtic and Manchester Utd’s European Cup victories and, of course, England’s World Cup triumph in July 1966. In the August issue every year fans would scrutinise the new fixture list for the coming season that Football Monthly made a point of publishing for all leagues and cups in both England and Scotland.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that football fans who love the history of the game still read back issues of Football Monthly to understand better how the game developed into the huge money-making spectacle that we see today.
