When “Doubles” Were Unique

By on 16 November 2017

This Saturday Spurs go to Arsenal and, probably in many supporters’ minds, they are the favourites for the first time in years. Not that the Bookies agree! This week though, SoccerAttic looks back on two achievements that these two North-London rivals managed in the last century – the League and FA Cup double.

Preston did the Double in 1889 and then Aston Villa in 1897. In the next 60 years, Newcastle in 1905, Sunderland in 1913 and Manchester United in 1956, all came close as they lost FA Cup Finals, having won Championship titles. Then in the 1960-61 season, Spurs finally managed to do something that in that era was very rare – the Double. It took them another 10 years to emulate them, but Arsenal repeated the feat in the 1970-71 season, for their first-ever Double.

Since the 1980s when a group of “elite” clubs have more or less cornered the trophy winning market – an “elite” only changing with the bank balances of billionaire owners – the Double has been done seven times. Liverpool (1986), Manchester United (1994, 1996, 1999), Arsenal (1998, 2002) and Chelsea (2010) have all achieved the Double in the last 30 odd years, whereas in the previous 100 or so years it was done just four times.
