When the Championship Went Down to the Wire

By on 19 May 2017

It’s been a few years since the Premier League championship was close enough to be decided on the last day. The 2011-12 season was the last to go down to the wire when Sergio Agüero’s last ditch winner against QPR saw Manchester City pip rivals Manchester Utd to the title on goal difference.

1950s Charles Buchan’s Icons

By on 12 May 2017

Hopefully, like us, you get a big buzz from looking at these original ‘icons’ from Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly. To us they are pieces of art in themselves and we are proud of the fact that the Vic Groves cover forms part of the wall decoration banner in the Arsenal press room at the Emirates. We hope you enjoy this selection from the 1950s as much as we did putting it together. Click on the image to see a bigger picture. Continuing on from last week, click on the banner and buy our ‘Road to Wembley 1966’ book, from our Shopify site and we will donate £5 to the Alzheimer’s Society.

It’s St Patrick’s day so SoccerAttic, as part 3 of our ‘Beyond the Centrefold’ feature, heads to Shoot Magazine, 2nd November 1974 and a team picture of the Republic of Ireland from that issue. They were due to face the USSR in a European Championship qualifier so, as a warm up for the game, took on Manchester Utd (then in the Second Division) at Old Trafford. Shoot’s photographer was there to snap the players and we’ve added our own background information on each of the line-up shown.

In the second part of SoccerAttic’s ‘Beyond the Centrefold’ feature, we look at the Everton side that won the 1962-63 Division One title under Harry Catterick. The team photograph is from Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly, February 1964 issue. Hover or tap each player to see more information.

Beyond the Centrefold – Wolves’ Class of ’69

By on 9 February 2017

Today we begin a new feature on SoccerAttic – Beyond the Centrefold. Looking back on the double page spreads of teams from football magazines of yesteryear, some of the faces are household names; others a distant memory. Either way, it’s interesting to go along the lines and find out a bit more about each of the players – where they came from; what happened to them.
